Zymosense Carbon
Nanotube Safety Policy

Effective Date: August 2021
Last Updated: March 2025

Overview

At Zymosense, safety is our highest priority. While we do not manufacture carbon
nanotubes (CNTs), we use them in solution-based applications sourced from certified
manufacturers. This policy outlines the risks, regulatory guidance—including NIOSH
recommendations—and the protocols we follow to ensure safe handling and disposal.

Material Sourcing
  • All CNTs are obtained from certified manufacturers in hazard-compliant
    packaging.
  • Zymosense does not synthesize CNTs on-site.
Understanding the Risks
  • Inhalation Risk: Dry CNTs can aerosolize and pose respiratory hazards.
  • Dermal Contact: CNTs may penetrate skin if contaminated materials are
    mishandled.
  • Environmental Impact: CNTs are biopersistent and require controlled disposal.
NIOSH Recommendations

Zymosense aligns with NIOSH guidance for CNT safety:

  •
  • Exposure Limit:
Maintain airborne CNT concentrations below 1 µg/m³ (elemental carbon as
respirable mass), measured as an 8-hour time-weighted average.
  • Hierarchy of Controls:
    • Engineering Controls: Use enclosures, local exhaust ventilation, and
      HEPA filtration.
    • Administrative Controls: Written nanomaterial safety program, risk
      assessments, and continuous improvement.
    • PPE: NIOSH-approved respirators for aerosolization risk, nitrile gloves, lab
      coats, and eye protection.
  • Handling & Disposal:
    • Treat CNTs and contaminated materials as hazardous waste.
    • Use wet cleaning methods; avoid dry sweeping or compressed air.
  • Exposure Monitoring:
    • Conduct workplace sampling using NIOSH-approved methods.
    • Maintain exposure logs and review regularly.
  • Training:
    • Annual CNT safety training for all personnel.
    • Ensure access to SDS and SOPs.
Zymosense Safety Protocols

Engineering Controls

  • CNT work is performed in ventilated biosafety cabinets or fume hoods.
  • HEPA filtration in waste handling areas.

Handling Procedures

  • CNT solutions handled using low-splash techniques.
  • Single-use items (pipette tips, wipes) disposed of immediately in sealed
    hazardous waste containers.
  • Surfaces cleaned with wet methods to prevent drying and aerosolization.

We retain personal data only as long as necessary:

  • All CNT-contaminated materials treated as hazardous nanomaterial waste.
  • Stored in clearly labeled, sealed containers and disposed of via certified
    hazardous waste services.
Spill Response
  • Clean spills with wet wipes and HEPA-filtered vacuums.
  • Dispose of cleanup materials as hazardous waste.
  • Log and review all incidents.
Commitment to Safety

Zymosense is committed to:

  • Staying informed on emerging CNT safety research.
  • Updating protocols in line with NIOSH standards and regulatory changes.
  • Collaborating with industry and academic partners to refine safety practices.
